'Capaldi Leaves Doctor Who' podcast

Capaldi leaves Doctor Who!

Just when you thought it was safe to go to bed, Peter Capaldi goes rogue on the radio and announces he’s leaving the role of Doctor Who, who he plays in the television show ‘Doctor Who’.

But, at ‘All of Whine and Space’, we don’t let things like it being a school night and already being in our PJs deter us from matters of worldwide importance - and frankly we can all agree that this is an issue of such gravity to the world as a whole that it supersedes anything else occurring in current affairs.

So, grab your electronic guitar, place your tasteful sunglasses on and ready your mucky jumper - it’s time for Moffat to take us around the world one last time!

The Stephen King Adaptation Project -‘The Shining’ (1997) commentary

We’re finally kicking off The Stephen King Adaptation Project in earnest, as we look back at the first part of the 1997 TV miniseries based on ‘The Shining’. It’s no secret that King felt that Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 film was severely lacking as a translation of his book and, in the late nineties, set out to Correct this. Harshly.

Stepping into the shoes of Kubrick’s film is an intimidating proposition, as rightly or wrongly, the 1980 film is a hugely visually iconic part of cinema history, making one wonder how any further re-adaptation could do anything but pale in comparison. However, we’ve found that though the miniseries may be comparatively lacking from a style perspective, in terms of characterisation, performances and channeling the spirit of the novel, the first part of the ’97 miniseries has a lot to offer.

Let’s get to it, shall we?

'Sherlock - The Final Problem' commentary

Everything must come to an end, even one of the super long and extremely frequent seasons of TV’s ‘Sherlock’. But this ending carries even more weight than usual, as whispers from the east have suggested that series 4 may very well be the last collection of adventures for our Beloved Baker Boyz.

In reality, WHINE+SPACE think the likelihood of ‘Sherlock’ continuing beyond series 4 is extreeeemely high - but if this episode is to be the last, is it successful as an ending? More importantly, does it just plain up work as a standard end to a Sherlock series, placing aside any speculation about the show’s future?

Sherlock - 'The Lying Detective' commentary

Last week, 'Sherlock' returned to our screens to continue its main narrative since the end of 2014's 'His Final Vow' with 'The Six Thatchers'. However, it would appear that in most circles, the reaction towards the episode was lukewarm to outright negative, with us at 'All of Whine and Space' finding much to enjoy in the episode, but ultimately feeling like we we witnessing one of the show's lowest points to this stage.

So imagine our surprise when we sat down to 'The Lying Detective' to discover that this thing was pretty darn good. In fact, it was very good. We might even be tempted to call it classic Sherlock. But have we deceived ourselves? Have we gotten so carried away with relief following the lacklustre first episode that we're falsely elevating 'The Lying Detective' higher that it deserves?

There's only one way to be sure - it's time for a heated debate!

'Sherlock - The Six Thatchers' review

The match is on! The shit is hot! The game is starting!

Yes, it's that time again, where, much like a rare astrological event that can only be fleetingly witnessed once every few decades, a new series of TV's 'Sherlock Holmes' is landing in our laps!

But how will the creative dynamic duo of Moffat and Gatiss address the now three year old cliffhanger that we were left with in 'His Last Vow'? Will there be stunning, bone-jarring repercussions that will reverberate through the entire series? Or will things be tidily swept under the carpet in the first ten minutes? There's only one way to find out - and that's to jam this podcast straight into your Sony Walk Man and brace yourself for heavy spoilers from the outset!
